The Creature From The Black Lagoon Navigation menu VideoThe Creature From The Black Lagoon - Explained
Title: Creature from the Black Lagoon A scientific expedition searching for fossils along the Amazon River discovers a prehistoric Gill-Man in the legendary Black Lagoon.
The explorers capture the mysterious creature, but it breaks free. The eponymous creature was played by Ben Chapman on land and Ricou Browning for the underwater scenes.
The cinematography is by William E. Snyder and the score is composed by a trio of men, Henry Mancini, Hans J. The story sees a scientific expedition at the top end of the Amazon encounter a Devonian Period amphibious creature.
As the creature starts to defend its turf by attacking members of the expedition, in fighting begins to take a hold as the men argue about the best course of action to take.
Should it be killed, or should it be captured for scientific research? Either way they need to act fast as the creature has taken a fancy to Kay, the sole female member of the expedition group.
However, unlike many of those film's that were made in the format over those two years, this one has rightly managed to break away from its gimmicky beginnings to become regarded as a genre classic.
There are many reasons why it is still well regarded and taken in appreciatively by newcomers. But much like Kong, Arnold's movie thrives within the endearing story by getting the audience to sympathise with the titular creature.
He is after all only defending his territory, he was happy wallowing down in the depths, remaining undiscovered for many a moon.
That he is fascinated by the considerable beauty of Kay Lawrence Adams sexy and gorgeous , is no crime either. The amount of sympathy garnered for "Gill-Man" is helped enormously by the illogical actions of the humans; who in turn go diving and swimming where legend has it men get eaten!

Civilization is so much more convenient. You gather everyone together in one area, build stable homes, create a centralized food supply, a sanitation system, public hygiene, education and transportation, health care, and fire departments.
Trick is, though, that if you want to be a part of it, you have to agree to bury all your natural impulses.
No, that would be an admission of defeat. Unthinking angry mobs, stupid violent yahoos, and sinister government forces are standard issue in sci-fi and monster movies.
The Gill Man, this deeply tragic and alienated character, the one who remains much more a victim throughout all three films than any of the puny humans he kills, is the one who maintains his dignity to the end, marching into the sea like James Mason in A Star is Born.
In an interesting but irrelevant footnote, in , John Landis was pushing Universal to let him produce a big budget remake of Creature from the Black Lagoon.
He already had Rick Baker signed and ready to do the makeup that would have been based almost bump for bump on the original Gill Man design.
The great Nigel Kneale had agreed to write the script. There was even talk about bringing Jack Arnold who was only in his 60s at the time back to direct.
The Gill-man is fully amphibious , capable of breathing both in and out of the water. It possesses large, webbed hands with sharp claws on the tip of each finger.
The Gill-man's scaly skin is extremely tough, which combined with a fast-acting healing factor, allows it to survive wounds which would be fatal to humans, such as gunshots and full immolation.
It also possesses superhuman strength, which is flamboyantly displayed in the second and third films.
As shown in the third film, the Gill-man has a dormant set of lungs , should its gills be irreparably damaged.
As shown in the first film, it is vulnerable to rotenone. The Gill-man is slightly photophobic , due to its murky water habitat.
The last known surviving member of a race of amphibious humanoids which flourished during the Devonian age, the Gill-man as christened by Dr.
Thompson dwelled in a lagoon located in a largely unexplored area of the Amazon rainforest. The creature was apparently known to the natives, as the captain of the boat Rita mentioned local legends of a "man-fish".
After having found the fossilized remains of another Gill-man, a marine biology institute funds an expedition to the Amazon in order to find more remains.
Though the Gill-man reacts violently to the intrusion, he develops a soft spot for the team's only female member, Kay, and repeatedly tries to abduct her, going as far as building a makeshift dam to prevent their boat from escaping.
After having killed numerous members of the expedition, the Gill-man takes Kay to his underwater lair, where he is tracked down by the remaining survivors and riddled with bullets.
The Gill-man tries to escape by swimming deep into the lagoon, but dies from his injuries. The creature plays a brief cameo emerging from lake Springfield in the Simpsons in the 10th episode of Season Flash" , and released in by Midway under the Bally brand name.
This game has a retro s drive-in theme. Completing side missions in the pinball game causes the screen to display "Universal Presents Creature from the Black Lagoon," and then requires the player to chase after the monster just like in the film.
The game sold 7, units. A series of children's books, written by Mike Thaler and Jared Lee, paradigm the film. In one song, it ponders the contents of Jack's present: "Perhaps it's the head that I found in the lake".
The film has been immortalized in paleontology circles. When Jenny Clack of the University of Cambridge discovered a fossil amphibian in what was once a fetid swamp, she named it Eucritta melanolimnetes , which is Greek for "the creature from the black lagoon.

Mark, obsessed with capturing or killing the Creature, objects. As the Rita tries to leave, they find the Gill-man has blocked the lagoon's entrance with fallen logs.
While the others attempt to remove the logs, Mark is mauled to death while trying to capture the Creature single-handed under water. The Gill-man then abducts Kay and takes her to its cavern lair.
David, Lucas and Carl chase after the Creature and Kay is ultimately rescued. The Creature is riddled with bullets before retreating to the lagoon, where its body sinks into the watery depths.
Producer William Alland was attending a dinner party during the filming of Citizen Kane in which he played the reporter Thompson when Mexican cinematographer Gabriel Figueroa told him about the myth of a race of half-fish, half-human creatures in the Amazon River.
Alland wrote story notes titled "The Sea Monster" 10 years later, using Beauty and the Beast as inspiration. Following the success of the 3D film House of Wax in , Jack Arnold was hired to direct the film in the same format.
The designer of the approved Gill-man was Disney animator Milicent Patrick , though her role was deliberately downplayed by make-up artist Bud Westmore , who for half a century received sole credit for the creature's conception.
Ben Chapman portrayed the Gill-man for the majority of the scenes shot at Universal City, California. Many of the on-water scenes were filmed at Rice Creek near Palatka, Florida.
The costume made sitting impossible for Chapman for the 14 hours of each day that he wore it and it overheated easily.
Due to these difficulties, Chapman often stayed in the studio's back-lot lake, frequently requesting to be hosed down.
He also could not see very well while wearing the headpiece, which caused him to scrape Julie Adams' head against the wall when carrying her in the grotto scenes.
Ricou Browning played the Gill-man in the underwater shots, which were filmed by the second unit in Wakulla Springs , Florida. Leonard Maltin awarded the film three out of a possible four stars, writing, "Archetypal '50s monster movie has been copied so often that some of the edge is gone, but Walter Harris , using the pseudonym "Carl Dreadstone", novelized the creature in a mass market paperback , part of a short-lived series of books based on the classic Universal horror films.
The novel, with an introduction by British fantasist Ramsey Campbell , offers a completely different Gill-man, who in this version is gigantic, being almost as big as the Rita herself, and weighing in at 30 tons.
The creature is both cold- and warm-blooded, is a hermaphrodite , and also possesses a long, whip-like tail.
The gigantic creature is dubbed "AA", for "Advanced Amphibian", by the expedition team members.
After slaying most of them, destroying a Sikorsky helicopter, and kidnapping Kay more than once, the huge Gill-man is killed by the crew of a United States Navy torpedo boat.
The novel also rewrites most of its human characters.
